As children reach school age, our comprehensive full-day kindergarten program helps them explore, communicate, and create – all in a nurturing, small-class setting of 24 students and 2 fully qualified teachers. Our curriculum offers reading, writing, language arts, math, science, social studies, technology, art, music and physical fitness presented in a fun way to encourage a lifelong love of learning.
Curriculum is aligned with the California Core Standards. You can find these standards online at www.corestandards.org
Phonics is an integral part of the language arts program in kindergarten. We
learn/review all the letter sounds and begin using them in our reading and writing
program daily.
Reader's and Writer's Workshop is a big component of the language arts
program. This program has been developed and guided by the curriculum
created at Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. The goal of
these workshops is to show children that they are all readers and writers in their
everyday lives. Through mini lessons, the children will learn skills and strategies
to help them become confident readers and writers. The teacher will have the
opportunity to conference with students individually and build upon their specific
skills. These workshops are extremely beneficial for them because the objective
is to work at the pace of the student, learning and practicing the skills they need
to build fluency through continuous exposure to the process of reading and
writing.
Math is everywhere! Our daily routine emphasizes many mathematical skills; from analyzing the calendar, tallying our days in school, graphing, and showing computation using real life problems- these are subtle ways that we weave math into our program. In kindergarten our mathematical experience is hands-on, using manipulatives and making math part of our everyday life. We will use a mix of different programs and resources to develop these skills. Due to the program being very hands on, you will not see a lot of work come home that involves math. The areas of concentration are numbers, patterns, geometrical shapes and concepts, sorting, measurement and problem solving. The activities are exciting and challenging and will help provide the foundation that your child needs in order to have a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
The science program follows the Next Generation Science Standards. These are standards that are geared towards the children learning as a group and working as a group. Some areas they will focus on are living and non-living, weather, water cycle, sun, engineering, ecology, safety, nutrition, fitness, and hygiene.
